Day 11: Chew Your Food

30 Days of YES
Day 11

Are you eating it? Or is it eating you?
-Larry Cohen

Happy Day 11 everyone!

Okay, how did taking the bull by the horns go for you yesterday? How are you feeling? I really want to HEAR from you all either in an e-mail back to me – or posting your experience in the blog posts or Facebook. How did it go? What did you take on? What inspiration and new insights did you discover? Share and share alike 

Where are you? I want to take a quick pulse of the people – and find out where you are? I am not so much concerned geographically (although that is cool) – but I would love to know what day you are on? Are you right on track with the current day – or did you start late or miss a day? Heck, I want to know if you stopped altogether. I am not judging you – so who cares – what day are you on?

Day 11: Chew Your Food

Today we are going to work on the practice of mindful eating. Much of what we’re doing is trying to slow down our hectic mind/thoughts – and bring us back into the present moment of what is actually going on – RIGHT NOW. To do this while eating is an amazing practice. I grew up in fast-food restaurants and inhaled my food instead of eating it. Yet, I worked with a man who would take a bite of his burger, set it back down on his wrapper, chew, fold the edge of his wrapper, and then repeat the process. It was humorous to me at the time – but now I see how much more he appreciated and enjoyed the entire meal. So, as you eat – try to focus on each bite. Notice the ingredients, tastes, texture, and smell – and just try to be present with your thoughts while eating. I can’t wait to hear how this goes for you!

That is Day 11 everyone. As always – you all are the best. Thanks for being on the journey!

Too funny!! I started reading today's assignment as I'm sitting in a fast-food drive-thru, which seriously happens about once a month. It hit me as comical, because I have definitely become more mindful over the last few years of what food I am actually eating, but here on my mindless day you post this blog. It did turn out to be a mindful meal though, because we were able to slow way down and discuss today's topic with the kids. I will certainly carry my mindfullness into future meals. Thanks so much for the reminder!

As for a quick update, I'm right on track with the current day.

We always read your blogs/watch the videos at night …so unfortunately I will be practicing conscious eating tomorrow. Whereas today I ate more like this:

There is a fantastic essay written by Thich Nhat Hanh called Tangerine Meditation that fits right into today's Yes activity. http://www.whatdoyouthinkmyfriend.com/Treasure/tangerine.html

And, I think that THIS is the ultimate diet plan for America. Mindful of what we eat and Mindful of the eating of it. You recognize not only your belly filling up but your mind filling up, and you stop eating when you truly full. Eating lunch like this avoids the 2:00pm sluggishness too.

That's hilarious Whitney!

I'm looking forward to this challenge Travis. I tend to fly through my meal, so today will be interesting.

I'm right on track!

I once took a mindful eating course/class that consisted of holding, looking, listening and eventually holding a single raisin in your mouth for about 20 minutes before you could chew. True story. I got this one! ;)

love this challenge...I found that
if we're mindful of our eating, we
will be also mindful of what we
are eating and how much.
I truly thought today, what do I
want to eat in a different way...
It was fun...I enjoyed the crunch
of my apple noticed the color and
texture along with the sweetness of
it. Carrots were enjoyed, ate them
slowly with some humus.
It made me slow down and just enjoy
the moment, which I'm sure was
exactly what you wanted..
Look forward to our new challenge.

I definitely slowed it down during lunch today, and the main thing I noticed is that I get fuller faster. Probably a good thing not to over-indulge in food.

Challenge Update: Other than skipping one of the days, I'm right on track!

Love all the comments!!! Tiger, way to turn a fast-food meal into a meaningful family gathering.

Whitney - the Cookie Monster is definitely mindful about his cookies ;)

SheSpeeds - thanks for the link. He also has an awesome book on mindful eating called "Savor." A great read.

Hayden and Shawn - how did it go?

Everyone else...20 minutes with a raisin...I need to try that!

Keep em coming!

I'm on Day 11...loving the journey.

So my usual bfast is a boiled egg, piece of fruit and a cup of tea...that is usually STONE COLD by the time I remember that I made it, changed a diaper, fed baby some bfast...you get the idea. So today, in honor of enjoying a meal, I set the stage first. Got the baby in her high chair, armed her with fruit slices and bread, and then made myself an omelette! Smoked salmon, sauteed purple onion, a little mozzerella cheese. I made toast. I made tea...and drank half the cup while it was still warm. :) I put my fork down between each bite. We sat together and ate breakfast. Though interestingly enough, most of my meal actually made it into my mouth...hers...not so much. Though I'm not sure that means she enjoyed hers any less. :)

When I was pregnant, someone with older kids told me "you'll never enjoy another meal slowly"...and yes, I can see how that can be the case. But this morning completely dispelled that story! Blam.

It was a damn fine omelette.
